For over 50 years, the Vinton County Air Show has been one of the premier tourism events in the region as pilots fly in and motorists drive to the Vinton County Airport, located six miles north of McArthur, Ohio. It’s not only the barnstorming flying that attracts visitors to the airport–it’s the famous BBQ chicken dinners cooked onsite over a huge fire pit.
Through the years, the air show has attracted thousands of visitors to the county with over 1,000 people visiting each year. Planes begin arriving early in the morning, which is a show in itself drawing an audience clustered along the fence-lined tarmac. Then, of course, there are always the special and unusual planes that arrive unannounced.
The air show features some spine-tingling flying by some of the best pilots around and also features remote controlled aircraft flown by seasoned pilots, many of whom are among the ranks of champions.
While there is a donation requested for parking, attendance at the air show is free, which is why the event is often referred to as “Ohio’s Largest Free Air Show.”
The BBQ chicken dinners are always available at 11 a.m. the day of the show, with the air show itself beginning at 1 p.m. There is always a lot of smoke and a lot of noise, especially if one of the jet performers is in attendance. After the show, pilots from the Vinton County Pilots and Boosters Association offer airplane rides.
The Vinton County Airport is one of the friendliest airports around. Anyone is welcome to visit the airport at any time, but especially during the air show and other events throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
